Our priority when it comes to rescuing animals is to take in animals that are being kept in less than ideal living situations. This often means taking in animals that are being abused, neglected, or have been abandoned. Many animals we seek to rescue are ones living in poor conditions, fed unsafe diets, have been denied medical care, or have been left outside to fend for themselves. Often times these animals are advertised online, like on Facebook, Craigslist, OfferUp. These are the animals we aim to rescue and give a second chance to.
Sully's Safe Haven was established in 2021, after the passing of our first rescued hedgehog, Sully. This is our sanctuary program, focused on rescuing and providing a forever home for hedgehogs, degus, short-tailed opossums, and those with chronic medical conditions. We also specialize in caring for aggressive hamsters and brachycephalic hamsters.
If you come across a domestic animal the first person you should contact if your city contracted animal control agency. They will have the animal posted as "LOST" in hopes of reuniting that animal with their guardian. Once their hold period ends, that agency can assist in adopting the animal out.
If you come across a wild animal that is possibly injured or abandoned, it is illegal for you to take them into your care. For the best chances at life for the animal, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center near you.
Life is unexpected. And sometimes things come up where guardians are scrambling to find help for their commission animals. We offer temporary foster placement for those going through crisis (up to 3 months maximum). Some situations that may lead to needing our services could be: in the middle of moving, going to rehab, incarceration, dealing with housing instability, or just in need of immediate assistance. Please note that we are only able to serve in this capacity when space allows at the rescue. Guardians must be in weekly communication with the rescue. Any animals deemed abandoned while in our care, will legally become wards of the rescue and the guardian will not be allowed to reclaim their animals.
As many of you may be well aware, rescues tend to fill up very quickly. It is unfortunate but we understand that there is a need to serve these animals and provide the best care for them. Although we occasionally have space in our rescue to take in owner surrenders, we also have a constant waitlist of animals seeking refuge at our rescue. It sucks we can't save them all. Many times this is of no fault to the animal but sometimes things just don't work out and we have to make tough decisions as to what is best for the animal. And that's why we started the Home-To-Home Program. Without having to make space in our rescue to take in animals in need of rehoming, we are able to have owners foster their pets until an approved adopter is ready to take that animal to their forever home. This decreases the stress of putting the animals through constant change of moving, although animals are some of the most resilient creatures out there. This means anyone interested in adopting from this program must still go through the rescue's adoption application and be approved. We may be able to include their current enclosure as well (should it be appropriate). Animals available for adoption through this program are listed on Petfinder with "H2H" next to their name.
